Cup-shape and folding respirators
One thing is certain: you protect your employees from respiratory pathogens and environmental poisons with the correct PPE. Which product reliably prevents the risk of work-related illnesses depends on the hazardousness and nature of the harmful substances involved in your operations.
Harmful substances? Be aware of the hazards!
Prevention at the workplace means recognising risks and preventing them with appropriate precautions. Employees working in many industries are exposed to hazards and pollutants in the air. Is your business involved in roadworks, mining, woodworking or metal fabrication? Airborne contaminants take many forms: among the most hazardous pollutants companies have to deal with are exhaust fumes from machines and engines as well as gases and chemical substances in production or biochemical processes.
In all these situations, your employees are exposed to risk at the workplace, where their health may be permanently damaged by breathing in harmful substances. The important thing is: recognise the hazard! Gases, vapours or particles e.g. fine dust can enter the bloodstream as a result of inhalation and cause occupational illnesses such as asthma, asbestosis or cancer. |
FFP (filtering face piece) classification
Type | Filter performance | Protection level |
FFP 1 | 80 % | Low (4): protects against harmful particles at up to 4-times the maximum permitted workplace concentration |
FFP 2 | 94 % | Medium (10): protects against harmful particles at up to 10-times the maximum permitted workplace concentration |
FFP 3 | 98 % | High (30): protects against harmful particles at up to 30-times the maximum permitted workplace concentration |
Stop! Limited periods of use!
The use of respirators over longer periods increases their breathing resistance. This results in additional stress on the user. Why is this so? The type of filter used in the mask is responsible for its protective effect. Particles gradually build up on the respirator filters during use, which adversely affects the filter material’s performance and increases breathing resistance. Therefore in workplaces with particularly high particle concentrations, it may be necessary to replace masks several times a day. If particulate filters become moist, they generally lose their protective effect.
Act quickly in these workplace scenarios: immediately leave the workplace and replace the mask if its breathing resistance increases or you feel unwell. Replace a mask if it becomes damaged or heavily soiled.
